The region is in contact with the Center region in the northwest, and the Southern region in the south. It is bordered to the east and northeast by the Gran Chiac, to the north by the Amazon, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Like the Center region, this region is made up of two geographically and naturally distinct areas: the Andes mountain range and the narrow coastal region. The Andes range expands the most in this section, creating a vast area of high-altitude plains known as the Bolivian Plateau. In the center of the region lies the huge highland lake Titicaca, which has always been the cultural center of the region. The plateau is located in the southern part of what is now Peru, in the west of Bolivia, and in the northwestern region of Argentina. It is bounded by two cordilleras from the east and west: Western and Central.
