Elizabeth Sidal

When the wife of the English artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rosetti died in 1862 for drug overdose, he buried one of his books of poetry with his wife. Years later, when his eyesight was dim and it was hard for him to paint, Rosetti decided to dig his poems out of the ground. He needed the permission of the Ministry of Interior to do this, because the bodies of the thieves had become a big problem at that time.

Although he was given permission, Rosetti wanted to keep the matter as secret as possible. Sidal's tombstone was removed from High Gate Cemetery in London, and the coffin was unearthed, and the manuscripts removed and disinfected. He is said to have been very disappointed that the poem he was looking for the most "had a great worm on all the pages." However, a detailed book of exhumed poems was published.
