Also included in the plans is to protect Barbican’s brutalist foyers and lakeside terrace.
Outside in the courtyard, the pond will be revamped to stop water leaking onto the Metropolitan Line below – there will be new fountains and seating outside too.
The visitor destination is already free to visit, and this will continue once the revamp is complete.
The refurbishment project is set to start in 2028 when it will close until 2029.
The Barbican was pipped to the post by the Taj Mahal, a picture-perfect landmark in India built in the 1600s – it’s not hard to see why it got top spot.
