History of the Ambulance

Larrey adapted the axle assembly from the French army's horse-drawn artillery ("flying artillery" - artillerie volante [fr]) that made their gun carriages especially maneuverable on uneven terrain, and so christened his ambulances "flying ambulances" (ambulances volantes).
