South Vietnam was part of the southern half Vietnam. It was declared an independent country after 1949 and became to be known as the State of Vietnam. South Vietnam had Saigon as its capital. After 1954 South Vietnam became a Communist Party. There were many uprisings within South Vietnam and every government had a short-lived period due military coups. The Vietnam War had started in 1956 between Northern half of Vietnam and Southern half of Vietnam. The Vietnam War came to an end in 1975 when South Vietnam dissolve to make a Vietnam after the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, fell.
