McDonald's burgers don't decompose: In 2008, health blogger Karen Hanrahan shared a photo of a McDonald's hamburger she'd bought in 1996 that still looked unchanged after 12 years. She suggested the burger’s long lifespan was due to preservatives, calling it "chemical food." However, food scientist J. Kenji Lopez-Alt explained that McDonald's burgers don't decompose normally because they dry out like pantry staples, becoming non-perishable.
