DeCarlos Brown Jr.'s mother has claimed that her son is not a racist because he "dated girls of all races." Brown, 34, told Zarutska after stabbing her: "I killed a white girl." In an interview with the New York Post, Junior's mother, Michelle DeWitt, insisted that the attack could not have been racially motivated, saying that her son "was definitely not a racist" because he "had relationships with all kinds of girls." She also explained that she had taken Brown to a homeless shelter a few days before the murder, during which time her son had been aggressive toward her and her husband.
