
Muslims, who could not use the human figure in the decoration of their buildings and books, as the Greeks and Romans did, used geometric shapes and calligraphy to create abstract decorative designs. In Islamic countries, the oldest graphic and calligraphy designs can be found in calligraphic Qurans, written with black ink on deerskin or papyrus paper with angular lines, like Kufic script.
