The Chauvet Cave in the Ardèche region of southern France is famous for having some of the oldest cave paintings, as well as works from the Neolithic period. The extraordinary paintings date back to the Orignation period, more than 30,000 years ago. Thanks to a rockfall that blocked the entrance to the cave more than 10,000 years later, the more than 1,000 paintings recorded on its limestone walls have remained intact and have been preserved in pristine quality for thousands of years.
