As with the betrothal, Sunday is the dedicated day for weddings in Bulgaria.  From the Thursday before, the bride’s mother will make breadpitka.  As the dough rises, it is symbolically representing the new family unit that the forthcoming wedding will bring. Meanwhile, the groom’s best man has the job of making the wedding banner, all of which involves a whole set of rituals, including felling a 6 foot long pole from a fruit-bearing tree – with a single blow of the axe.
